Slate Roofing around Ballarat East
For the Humffray Street Precinct the statement says: Typically, the residential buildings, associated shops and the former hotel are single storey in height, with hipped and/or gabled roofs clad in either corrugated galvanised iron, slate or Marseilles pattern terra cotta tiles and have eaves and verandahs. For the Victoria Street Precinct: Residential buildings within the precinct are characterised by their single storey, hipped and gabled roofs clad in corrugated iron, slate or tiles, weatherboard or brick construction, timber windows, verandahs, timber fences and regular setbacks. The Humffray Street schedule lists addresses such as "Coffield Street BALLARAT EAST VIC 3350". The line is from City of Ballarat's Heritage Precincts Statements of Significance, dated July 2025; it describes the precinct, not any property. It does not say that any given house sits inside the precinct or has a slate roof.
Both statements name slate beside corrugated iron and tiles, so slate is one cladding among several in these precincts. Ask the City whether the property is in either precinct, and ask the provider what the quote assumes about the existing roof.

Permits and City of Ballarat rules
The council confirms whether a roof job here needs a planning permit: in a Heritage Overlay, repairs to the same details, specifications and materials as existing need none, while complete replacement of original or significant roof cladding generally does.
